Celebrating 40 years of Northern Ballet School

Performance Experience

Live public performances are an integral part of the training at Northern Ballet School. Our student productions are all staged at a professional level in the superb surroundings of our own publicly licensed 430-seat theatre.

This introduces new students to the rigours of theatrical discipline and performing in front of a paying public audience, while providing their family and friends with a thoroughly memorable entertainment event:

Annual full length classical ballet

This usually takes place in December with full sets and lavish costumes. It is always a wonderful introduction to the festive season for students, staff and, of course, our audiences.

Annual musical theatre production

Usually staged in March or April, this gives our Jazz Theatre Focus students a chance to demonstrate their skills.

The annual Dance Showcase

Each July all full-time students take part in a major show which highlights the full breadth of the NBS training curriculum in dance, singing and acting.

Workshops

Regular workshops are held with current industry professionals in a variety of dance genres.

“As a graduate I received not only top class training but a plethora of qualifications and opportunites, including teaching examinations, TV appearances and performance experience in their own in-house theatre. My three years at Northern Ballet School provided everything I needed and more, and made it possible for me to pursue my career in this amazing industry!”

Community performances and collaborations

Other equally valuable student performance opportunities and experiences include workshops for children and for groups with disabilities in schools and other venues. The aim is to promote dance not only as a theatrical art form but also as a possible career for those who might not have considered that option.

A good example of the school's recent community collaboration is our work with Manchester's Company Fierce. This exciting group provides multi-media and dance theatre performance in Greater Manchester and beyond, delivering an inspired mix of dance productions, community projects and educational work.

Another high profile example of our outreach work was a collaboration with the Hallé Orchestra on 'Around the World with the Hallé' – part of its education programme. For this, NBS students choreographed and taught dance works in a number of schools.

NBS has also been involved with many other organisations including the BBC and Granada Television.

Our work with the Royal Northern College of Music

This exciting annual project involves NBS third year students choreographing dance works to music specifically composed for them by senior students at the college.
