The physical and mental
well-being of its students receives equal
emphasis at NBS to that accorded to the
quality of education and training provided.
In support of this important objective the
school has well defined channels for staff/student
communication and a pro-active health and
safety policy, which includes student representation
on the monitoring committee. All new students
are issued with a handbook, which sets out
clearly the school rules and procedures
and how to obtain guidance or help with
any problems, but some of its more important
arrangements are stated here.
Each year cohort has a Year
Tutor, who holds group and individual tutorials
termly. Each cohort elects two student representatives,
who may raise matters of general concern
with the Year Tutors or with the Principal.
The Principal operates an
‘open-door’ policy for staff
and students alike, normally being available
on the same day or within 24 hours of a
request for an interview.
Students may raise matters
of concern with members of staff other than
their Year Tutors or student ‘ reps’,
if they so prefer.
There are trained and experienced
counsellors at the hostels and residencies
most used by NBS students, although they
are not responsible to the school.
NBS students may, and indeed
are encouraged to, become Associate Members
of the National Union of Students, which
has advice and information centres nearby
(at which affordable personal effects and
medical insurance can also be obtained).
All new students are advised
to register with one of the general medical
practices near to the school or with one
close to their place of residence.
A number of NBS staff are
trained first-aiders and there is a well
equipped first aid/physiotherapy room on
the premises.
There are general accident
and specialist eye, dental and foot hospitals
close by, which accept emergency cases.
The school has a consultant
physiotherapist and links with a range of
nearby centres specialising in Sports and
Dance injuries, but the school does not
provide free treatment.
Students are advised to
take out personal medical insurance for
specialist orthopaedic or physiotherapy
dance injury treatment.
Full medical absence and
dance injury records are kept and monitored
regularly.
Regular lectures on nutrition
for dancers are given by a highly qualified
specialist in the fields of Sport Science
and Psychology.
